Tigrinya is classified as a North Ethiopic Semitic language along with its parent language, Geez (now no longer spoken) and Tigre, the language of the largely Muslim tribes who inhabit the Red Sea coast north of Mitsiwa, the inland area north of Keren, and much of Eritrea’s western lowlands. It is the language of highland Eritrea, namely the provinces of Hamasien, Akkele Guzay and Serae, Tigray province (Agame, Haramat, Geralta, Tembien, Enderta, Wogerat, Shire, Adiyabo), and the adjoining regions of Gondar Province, Woldebba, and Tsellemti. Tigrinya is not standardized, but is spoken in a number of mutually intelligible dialects. The 60,000 entries in the dictionary are arranged by root (or if there isn’t a root, by the initial letter of the word according to the order of the Ethiopic alphabet, with some exceptions).
