This present dictonary is a companion volume to Afar-English-French Dictionary published in 1985 by School of Oriental and African Studies at University of London, London.
The present work's target audience is Afar native speakers. Each English headword (and subheadword) is accompanied by its phonetic pronunciation, its English part of speech, a corresponding Afar translation, and a complete example sentence in English, also translated into Afar, to illustrate a usage of the English word. List of over 10,000 English headwords includes all words translated from Afar into English in the Afar-English-French dictionary, plus additional words such as abstract and technical vocabulary from various fields, and words obtained by cross-checking against English dictionaries into geographically adjacent languages, including Arabic and Amharic.
