Akan, also called Twi-Fante, belongs to the Tano group of languages of the Central Comoe branch, a sub-division of the Kwa sub-group that belongs to the Niger-Congo language family. Related languages include Anyi (Aowin), Sehwi, Nzema, Ahanta, Efutu/Awutu, Anum, Kyerepong, and Larteh. Akan has over 10 million speakers. Of three orthographies (Akuapem, Asante and Fante) exist in Akan, the Asante orthography is used in this reader.
There are four sections altogether in this reader. Front-matter includes acknowledgements, introduction to Akan culture and Akan language, and references. Selection section includes 33 articles that were selected from various Akan newspapers. Each selection is followed by a list of Vocabulary in the order in which they appear in the text. Translations section includes English translations of these selections. Glossary section is a composite glossary for all the selections and sorted according to Akan alphabet.
