The Comprehensive Uzbek-English Dictionary is a complete revision of our Uzbek-English Dictionary (Revised, Karl A. Krippes, 1996). This volume includes the letters "A"-"N" in the Uzbek Latin alphabet. Volume Two will cover the letters "O' - "CH." It incorporates our other work in Uzbek including Uzbek–English Dictionary of Phrases (Khayrulla H. Ismatulla, 1998) and Disaster Preparedness Glossary Uzbek-English English-Uzbek (Abdusattor Sharafiddinov, Thomas Creamer, 2005). Our new dictionary benefits from the latest lexicographic research from Uzbekistan, especially A.Madvaliev et al, S.F. Akobirov. Ўзбек тилининг изоҳли луғати (An Annotated Dictionary of the Uzbek Language, volumes 1-3. Uzbek National Encyclopedia, National Science Publishing House, 2007).
Our methodology is encapsulated in our theme: Real words from real texts. The headwords have been taken from a corpus featuring a wide range of modern Uzbek texts written in both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets covering a variety of topics. In addition to the printed texts, we have supplemented our corpus with transcribed, unrehearsed conversions between native Uzbek speakers. In this way, we attempt to document the way Uzbek is spoken and written today. This volume contains 19,108 headwords so collected.
