The present dictionary may be considered a complete revision of the Afar-English-French Dictionary (With Grammatical Notes In English), published in 1985 by the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London, co-authored by myself and R J Hayward.
The vocabulary has been considerably expanded since 1985. The present work includes all Afar vocabulary found in my English-Afar Dictionary, published in 2006 by Dunwoody Press, plus some newly-researched words. In a very few cases, newly-researched words whose meaning has been checked less thoroughly, but whose inclusion was considered worthwhile, have been marked with asterisks.
In the interest of timeliness and accuracy, the French-language glosses from the 1985 work have been omitted.
The introduction to the present work contains a brief outline of Afar pronunciation, and of such grammatical points as are necessary to understand the annotations against each Afar headword.
