This Dari-English Dictionary, First Edition contains approximately 20,000 entries. It is based primarily on the Dari-Russkiĭ slovar (L. N. Kiseleva and Mikolaĭchik, V. I., 1978, 744 pages, Russian Language Publishing House, Moscow), and has been adapted and updated for an English-speaking audience. It is best used in combination with the Dari-English Dictionary (Qāmūs-i Darī-Inglīsī, Mohammad Nasim Neghat, principal investigator, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Center for Afghanistan Studies, xxv, 807 p, 1993). This dictionary is intended for professional Dari-to-English translators.
This dictionary will form the basis of revised editions to be published in the near future. New editions will feature neologisms, slang, and technical vocabularies. As part of the ongoing revisions, we welcome any comments, corrections, and additions to make this dictionary even more useful.
